REDEMPTION: Its meanings for therapists and clients
Robert Cumming, Saturday 10 May 2008 |
The Orangery Suite, Merley | MAP
|
Price £65
| To be redeemed has many meanings, not least to be freed from slavery. This could be a single event or encompass the struggles which lead up to that liberation. Redemption has become a powerful cultural and spiritual metaphor, and therapy for both its practitioners and clients can be seen in many instances to be a redemptive project, in that we seek to move from a bad, burdened state to a good, en-lightened state, perhaps by hard work, or by rapid transformative change, or by finding a new community where our impediments become gifts. This workshop will explore redemptive stories, in therapy and elsewhere, and seek to understand the hazards and opportunities which ideas of redemption present to us as helpers, as people, and as clients. It will include the presentation of some recent research material on redemption, small group work and experiential exercises. |
Robert CummingRob Cumming practices counselling, supervises therapists, and is a freelance trainer. He recently completed an MSc in narrative therapy at Bristol and his dissertation was a study of redemption. As a therapist he tends towards narrative and similar practices, some of which will feature in this workshop. |

AN INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS
Helen Bolderston, Saturday 5 July 2008 |
The Orangery Suite, Merley | MAP
|
Price £65
| Mindfulness is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in our lives, by paying attention to the present moment, non-judgementally. This can help us see things differently, and to move towards greater levels of health and well-being. It is an approach that is also increasingly being seen as valuable for a wide range of people with mental health and physical health difficulties, with evidence supporting its use with people experiencing problems such as anxiety, stress, binge eating disorder, chronic pain and psoriasis. This workshop will provide participants with opportunities to experience different aspects of mindfulness mediation practice, as well as providing an introduction to both theory and research evidence. There will also be the chance to discuss the relevance of mindfulness to different client groups. |
Helen BolderstonHelen Bolderston worked for many years as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the NHS. She is currently engaged in research, as well as providing training and supervision. She has a particular interest in acceptance-based approaches, including mindfulness as well as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. She uses her own mindfulness practice, training and guided retreats to develop her skills as a mindfulness teacher. She runs both brief mindfulness workshops and eight-week mindfulness courses. |
